Manual of the Automatic Pistol Caliber .45 Model of 1911 (War Plans Division, May 1918, Document No. 801) - This stapled 36 page manual appears to be a hybrid crossover between a field manual and technical manual. I honestly do not know of any earlier manuals on the 1911 pistol other then this one. The manual consists of three major parts plus appropriate picture plates. Part 1 consists of pistol operation, disassembly, assembly, ballistics, and ammunition. Part II concerns pistol drill. Finally, Part III teaches one the rules of safety, shooting positions, accuracy, how to aim, etc. Of interest, I recently saw an original book of this manual for sale on the Internet for well over $100.00. This is a stapled pamphlet consisting of 36 pages. The paper is 24# bright white (102+).

The manual is actually pretty thorough in the following areas: mechanical training, loading and firing mounted and unmounted (they're talking horses here), firing at field targets, mechanical training, range practices, assembly and disassembly, etc. This manual is 96 pages long and comes in 5.5" X 8.5" in size. There are several illustrations done on horseback. Amazingly, the course for horseback shooting is laid out very thoroughly!
